Yamaha unveils MotoGP-inspired, 200-horsepower R1 and R1M for 2015

Image
Yamaha has fired all cannons in the latest instalment of the World Superbike wars with the release of the new YZF-R1 and R1M. MotoGP gods Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo made an appearance at EICMA Milan to pull the covers off what Yamaha is calling “the most MotoGP-inspired motorcycle ever” – and while we’ll leave it to others to debate whether Ducati’s Desmosedici RR already took that title long ago, the new R1 looks like a very yummy piece of kit. In recent years it’s been European bikes setting the supersports agenda, with BMW’s S1000RR, MV Agusta’s F4 and Ducati’s Panigale beating each other over the heads with peak power figures around the 200-horsepower mark and the Japanese factories maintaining a dignified separation back around the 180 mark. 2015 seems to be the year Japan decided “enough!” Kawasaki struck first, a month ago, with the frankly silly H2R, packing 1,000 supercharged cubic centimeters of lunacy that’s said to peak out at 300 horsepower and is now availab...

BMW S1000RR Vs. the World!

Image
The time was right for a manufacturer to shake things up and force the Big Four to rethink their sportbike strategies. Japanese sportbikes went a bit stagnant in recent years and have relied on gizmos and gadgets over pure power for new model introductions. The second generation Hayabusa is living proof; the new engine makes only a few more horsepower than the older bike, but now it has selectable fuel mapping. Meanwhile, the latest R1 is down on power from the previous model but the engine's firing order has been redesigned-with debatable results. Honda's revised CBR1000RR found a lot of success after its introduction in 2008, and aside from its questionable styling it performs incredibly well. Its only shortcoming is that perhaps it does everything too well-meaning it's a little bit too vanilla for enthusiasts seeking a bike with major character. Kawasaki has made strides forward since introducing the ZX-10R in 2004, but for a company that's always had a reputati...

Yamaha To Introduce Two Electric Motorcycles In 2016

Image
Looks like Yamaha will be joining the EV fray with electric motorcycles coming to production in 2016. One will be a street version, another for the dirt. They were first revealed as concepts at the 2013 Motor Show, and careful reading of the company’s 2013 annual report discovered mention of the PES1 and PED1. PES is short for “passion, electric, street,” and as you might imagine, PED is “passion, electric, dirt.” Specs are unknown, but it’s believed they’ll use an automated gearbox that can operate manually or automatically via a switch. Presently, some of the most innovative electric motorcycles are coming out of Silicon Valley and Oregon from Zero, and Brammo, and other companies are doing some neat products as well. To see a major Japanese motorcycle company take this bold move is a positive turn of events. Now if only we could see Toyota do an about face and announce a Model S competitor, that would be something.

2013 BMW R1200GS vs. Yamaha Super Tenere – Adventure Bike Comparison

Image
If you didn’t know who your father was, you might have a hard time knowing what you should aspire to be. Forty or so years after the Yamaha DT1 and the later BMW R80GS helped launch the “adventure” movement, their progeny are still at it, delivering the most versatile motorcycles available. Each is a masterful cross between dirtbike and luxury tourer, with plenty of “sport” sprinkled all over. The BMW R1200GS is 100-percent all-new but with trademark features strikingly similar to the previous rendition’s. Yamaha’s Ténéré is still riding high since it raised the bar in 2012, but the advantage often goes to the player latest into the game. To find out who’s boss, my wife, Heather, and I rode both on a multi-day adventure to and from twisty roads that may or may not take a turn for the worse (or into dirt); no plan, no destination, just riding light and free with a bit of mystery around the next turn. And plenty of timev to argue about the machines. And other things. The spec sheet...
